Bridge building Projects undertaken by theGerman Language & Culture Foundation – 501 © (3) 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010

Scholarships in the amount of over US$110,000 paid……. and counting ……

·   Build bridges amongst the German-American community in the Charlotte Region through
    the annual "Jazz in the Village" fundraising event
(next event September 24, 2010).

·   Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): 25 scholarships during 2010, for
    students of the German Immersion program of Smith Academy, to travel to Germany
    to attend school there and to learn through home hosting more about the German
    language and culture.

·   Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC): 3 scholarships (2 in 2010, 1 in 2009) to students for a
    4 week study trip each, including home hosting and German Language classes at the Goethe Institute in
    Heidelberg.

·   The UNC Charlotte Foundation: 8 scholarships for students majoring in German language (most students
    double major; one student triple major - see UNCC press release on our web site
    www.germanfoundation.com (2010).

·   Gaston County Schools: Financial support for 5 American high-school students enrolled in German
    language classes to further their German language and intercultural skills by attending a summer program
    in Germany (2010).

·   Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): supporting 1 German language teacher to attend
    seminars in Germany on how to make teaching the German language and culture more exciting and to
    accompany a group of 9 American High School Students to attend classes in a German High School (2010).

·   Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): financial support for 4 American high-school students
    enrolled in German language classes to further their German language and intercultural skills by spending
    a year in Germany through the Rotary Exchange Program (2010).

·    Deutsche Schule Charlotte -DSC (German Saturday School) located at British-American School
   
 educating German and American children and adults on weekends in the German language and culture.
     The DSC is the oldest foreign language Saturday school in the Southeastern USA (2009/2010).

·    Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): Scholarships for 25 students in the total amount of
     $5,000 (five thousand only) towards the German Immersion Program at Smith Academy.
     (2010 – to be paid in Jan. 2011)

·    Charlotte Symphony: Provide tickets for over 100 CMS students enrolled in German language classes, to
     attend the “Berlin in Lights” concert of the Charlotte Symphony at no charge. The concert featured
     music by German composers and financially supported the Charlotte Symphony (2009).

·    Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): financial support for 6 American high-school students
     enrolled in German language classes to further their German language and intercultural skills by attending
     a summer program in Germany (2009).

·    Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): supporting 1 German language teacher to attend
     seminars in Germany on how to make teaching the German language and culture more exciting (2009).

·    Host jointly – with UNC Charlotte – the “60th anniversary Berlin Airlift – 1948/49 – 2008/09 
     – Friends Always” exhibit (Summer 2009)

·    Speak to over 700 CMS students and faculty about the events surrounding the Berlin Airlift (2009).

·    Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): $5,000 (five thousand only) towards the German
     Immersion Program at Smith Academy
. (2009 – paid in Jan. 2010)

·    The World Affairs Council of Charlotte in support of an educational program (World Quest for over 120
     students of CMS and private schools in 2008).

·    Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): financial support for 1 American high-school student
     enrolled in German language classes to further her German language and intercultural skills by spending
     a year in Germany under the Rotary Exchange Program (2008).

·    Financial support of a joint program by International House and the McColl Center for Visual Arts
     promoting works of a young German artist (2008).

·    Financial support of a Mecklenburg, NC – Mecklenburg, Germany artist exchange organized and
     promoted by the Künstlerbund Mecklenburg und Vorpommern e.V.  (2008).

·    Financial support for a “German Language Lunch” organized by CMS for their top German Language
     students. (2008)

·    Pfeiffer University: financial support for 2 visiting students from Germany to pursue their post graduate
     degree (2008).

·    Charlotte Mecklenburg School System (CMS): financial support for 2 American high-school students
     enrolled in German language classes to further their German language and intercultural skills by visiting
     Germany for a one year period as part of an exchange program (2008).

·   The UNC Charlotte Foundation: scholarships for 8 students to study in Ludwigsburg or Mannheim, 
    Germany for a period of either 12 month or 6 months each (2007/2008/2009/2010).

·    Financial support of German artist Dieter Appelt, who exhibited his photographs at the Light Factory,
     Charlotte, NC
(2007).

·    Financial support for public diplomacy in conjunction with the City of Charlotte, NC and its sister city
     Krefeld/Germany
including a tree planting at the Government Park (2007).

·    Financial support for the DSC - Deutsche Schule Charlotte (German Saturday School) located at
     British-American School educating German and American children and adults on weekends in the
     German language and culture. The DSC is the oldest foreign language Saturday School in the
     Southeastern USA (2007).

 


The German speaking business community, with the support of American business partners, promoted these and similar projects in an effort to attract investments from Austria, Germany and Switzerland, while providing career opportunities to German speaking students with the over 200 US subsidiaries from German speaking countries in the Charlotte Region.
